Words. The last three months, that’s all I was concerned about was words. Trying to learn new words. It is good to be home, but about half way through the three months, I was in prayer and thinking about all that I was experiencing. I got to thinking about words, and that at almost every Mass, almost every Mass, we hear words of Jesus or actions of Jesus.
“Why these particular words” is where my mind went. The gospel writers, Matthew Mark Luke and John: why did they record these particular words? They were with him for three years. I’m sure there were almost countless numbers of words that Jesus said in those three years. Why these?
It dawned on me: we need to pay close attention. When the gospel says: “and Jesus said” we need to stop and listen again at the importance of what was being said. Why did he say what he said? Why was it recorded the way it was recorded? For instance Jesus’ response to Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.
