What is so important about this feast day? Why do we have to call Mary the Mother of God? Is not recognizing that she is the Mother of Jesus enough?
These questions were asked, and answered centuries ago. It was such a heated discussion that the bishops involved actually got into fist fights, according to the record as I have been told. So this is obviously something very important.
You see, the question about calling Mary the Mother of God is not as much about who Mary is as who Jesus is. Is Jesus God and man? That is a defining difference between orthodox Christianity and the messes that people have made of theology that have left some people claiming to be Christian, but who are not. It has set up many heresies. Including, according to one church historian, the Muslim religion. They accept Mary as the mother of Jesus, but they will not say Mary is the mother of God. That is because they do not accept Jesus as God.
